NIFHA meets with MEP Jim Nicholson
Friday 19 March 2010
Representatives from NIFHA held a meeting with the UUP's Jim Nicholson to discuss the impact of EU Public Procurement on social housing in Northern Ireland. The meeting was held at the MEP's office in Belfast where Chris Williamson (NIFHA's Chief Executive) and Arthur Canning (Trinity Housing and NIFHA Council Member) outlined what aspects of the EU's Public Procurement had an impact on social housing provision in Northern Ireland. He provided specific examples of work which was not able to go ahead as a direct result of the EU ruling. Chris also provided examples from other member states.
On behalf of our developing housing association members Chris asked Mr Nicholson to raise the challenges facing social housing in light of the EU's regulations.
After the meeting Chris commented: "Whilst we agree there should be fair competition across the single market certain aspects have proved detrimental to affordable housing provision in NI." He went on to say: "We ask our MEPs to campaign for adaptations to the rules to take account of social housing's need."
