Supporting People In Action
Older People
One of the key SP groups for housing association providers is older people. The majority of such support services are delivered in sheltered housing. This type of accommodation generally includes:
- alarm systems
- warden support with the housing,
- independent living skills
- security
- assistance with wider support needs.
It is important to note that care needs fall under the remit of Social Services.
The preventative agenda is a key aspect of supporting people for this group of clients. Helping people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, is a fundamental driver under the SP agenda. This helps reduce the pressure on more expensive care services.
An example of the supporting people process in action in a sheltered housing environment is Wesley Court, Carrickfergus.
Wesley Court, Carrickfergus is a sheltered housing scheme for the elderly, owned and managed by Wesley Housing Association.
Completed in 1996, it consists of 28 flats, 9 bungalows with communal facilities and accommodation for the scheme’s supervisor. In addition it offers a 24-hour emergency support from Fold Telecare.
![]() | Wesley Court ’s oldest resident is Mrs Elizabeth Robinson (pictured with her family on her 100th Birthday) who has lived there since the scheme was opened. Mrs Robinson, moved to the scheme when her previous accommodation became no longer suitable for her needs. She is delighted with the support services of the Scheme Supervisor together with the 24-hour emergency support from Fold Telecare, which enable her to live independently in her own flat. |
