Fold’s new Chairperson, Diana Fitzsimons welcomed the Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland MLA to celebrate the completion of the first 37 new homes in the Village Regeneration Area.
Fold’s Chief Executive, John McLean commented at the opening of Phase 1 of the Village Regeneration Area, ‘Fold is delighted to be part of the regeneration of the Village. As we mark the completion of the first 37 homes in this project, we are looking forward to completing a further 50 units in phase 2 by the end of December 2013. We then move to Phase 3 with the commencement of 27 new homes. We are also refurbishing and restoring 9 existing properties, these are due for completion in January 2014. After this we will refurbish a further 13 properties, retaining their traditional character whilst providing well designed homes for smaller families and singles.’
John continued, ‘Though the collaborative approach with the design team, community, DSD and the NIHE, we managed to reinvigorate this important and historical neighborhood within South Belfast’.
Fold’s Architects, JNP, commented at the opening that the recognisable feature of the original ‘red brick’ was an important factor for the community in the development, to positively retain the character and identity of the neighbourhood. The community’s aspiration was that behind a simple red brick façade would lie an internal layout with clean lines, good proportioned living spaces and an abundance of natural light, all providing more flexible accommodation to meet ever changing family requirements. Everyone has worked closely together to ensure that the redevelopment took the form of the existing street network and that the original street names were retained. We were also pleased to achieve Code Level 4 Sustainable Homes, making the heating of homes affordable and environmentally friendly.
