NIFHA warmly welcomes the decision of the NI Executive to seek a reversal of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reclassification of Northern Ireland housing associations as public bodies. This includes a commitment to amend legislation where appropriate.
Cameron Watt, NIFHA Chief Executive, said: “NIFHA is delighted that the NI Executive has acted swiftly and decisively to seek a reversal of the ONS decision to reclassify NI housing associations as public bodies.
“Together, government and housing associations have a strong track record of delivering social and affordable homes. The Executive’s decision is vitally important in sustaining this successful partnership.
“We are grateful to Communities Minister Paul Givan MLA and Finance Minister Máirtín Ó Muilleoir MLA for their immediate and effective response to the ONS decision. Both Ministers have recognised the crucial role of housing associations in delivering much-needed homes.
“We look forward to working with both Ministers and their departments to achieve the right outcome for housing delivery.”
